Covet - MinaSaku - Pt 3/WIP
Sep. 6th, 2020 12:55 amNaruto wouldn’t look at her.
Above her still pink, warm cheeks, Sakura’s brows furrowed as she went to join Naruto by the fire for breakfast, but he seemed to have become mute for the first time in their adult life.
“Hey,” said Sakura, nudging him with her elbow. “Everything OK?”
His blue eyes fixed on the fire, Naruto poked it with a stick and held his words to himself. He was expressionless, though his jaw was tense.
“You look like your dad with that intense expression,” teased Sakura. “Did you sleep well? I didn’t hear any snoring last night.”
Still Naruto ignored Sakura, and she felt the stirrings of unease. Had she done something wrong?
“Naruto?”
Sakura reached for his arm but Naruto jerked away, getting to his feet.
“Perimeter check,” he muttered, walking away from her until he disappeared into the snowy treeline.
“I’ll talk to him,” murmured Minato, sliding his mask into place as he passed by, leaving a gentle touch on her caped shoulder. “Eat. You need your strength.”
Sakura nodded almost imperceptibly, turning back to the fire. Her appetite was gone, but she knew she needed to keep her energy levels up. She reached for some of the chicken congee that steamed in the pot over the fire. It was tasteless in her mouth.
She glanced at the woods again from the corner of her eye.
Fifteen minutes later, they still hadn’t returned.

“Naruto,” called Minato once he and his son were out of hearing from the rest of the team. “Stop.”
Ignoring him, Naruto pushed on, running faster, pushing harder, to get away.
“Naruto. Naruto! Son! Vulpes, halt!” commanded Minato in his captain-voice, his blue eyes flashing dangerously. With a shunshin he was in front of his son, arms wide. “I order you to stop. You’re too far from camp.”
“Tch,” grunted Naruto, sidestepping his father.
“That’s an order,” said Minato tightly, grabbing Naruto’s shoulder.
“Is that what you said to Sakura?”
Blue sky met blue steel as the men glared at each other.
“As your captain—”
“You’re taking advantage of her!”
“What happens between two consenting adults is none of their friends’ concern,” said Minato evenly. “Or family member’s concern.”
Naruto exploded, slapping his father’s hand away and whirling on him. “On a mission? With the rest of the team there? When she’s barely getting enough sleep as it is, with missions, hospital work, supporting the Hokage at the Tower, and now you, wearing her down? How could you?! Please tell me you’re using protection, because Sakura is far too valuable to risk losing to some… accident,” spat Naruto with disgust. He shook his head, looking away from his father. “I can’t believe you went after her, of all people. She’s young enough to be my sister! She IS my sister!”
“Sakura and I are in a relationship, Naruto. A mature, adult relationship. We engage in adult activities that bring us both pleasure and help us release stress, as equals.”
“You can’t be equals when you’re our team lead,” countered Naruto with a growl.
“Are you jealous?” asked Minato.
“What? No! I’m worried about my best friend being used as a fuck buddy by her boss!” shouted Naruto, throwing his hands out. “And that that shithole boss is my own father is so disappointing I want to throw myself off a bridge. How could you take advantage of Sakura like that, Dad? Anyone. You could have anyone, and you go for my best friend? What is wrong with you! And treating her like she’s a cum dumpster, on a mission, with other team members around? How could you?”
Minato watched his son’s furious pacing a moment before replying.
“That’s what you think I’m doing… using Sakura?” Minato asked, more calmly.
“It is exactly what you’re doing. If Sasuke or Itachi were to find out, they’d have your head on a pike in Kakashi’s office. Oh shit, Kakashi,” moaned Naruto, rubbing his face with his hands. “You can’t let Kakashi know, shit shit shit.”
“Naruto.”
“Kakashi will bounce you right out of ANBU. He’ll tear away your rank. He may declare you a missing-nin. He acts like he doesn’t care about us but he does and he is dad-level protective of Sakura,” babbled Naruto. “Shit!”
“Naruto.”
“He’ll slaughter you if he finds out what you did to Sakura on the mission. In your own tent!”
“Naruto…”
“She still smelled like you when she came out of there, Dad. It’s really uncomfortable, to be honest. And you know what my sense of smell is like, so I, like, really know, like, on an awkward level.”
“Naruto,” sighed Minato, his head in his hands.
“Like, are you trying to get her pregnant? Because she really, really, I mean, you left… like, it’s one thing if you’re behind closed doors with a woman your age, that I would have less of a problem with, but Sakura has a reputation for not putting up with possessive bullshit and what you did smacked of it.”
“Naruto!”
“What?”
Minato took a deep breath. Naruto’s imagination really ran away with him at times.
“Kakashi is aware that there is a relationship between Sakura and me. Not the intimate details, but he is aware of it. Sakura told him. He has directed her to proceed with caution.”
“He did WHAT?!”
Minato sighed again.
Leaning against a burl, Minato patted the space beside him. “We need to have a talk, son.”
“Uh, I had the talk a few years ago, so I don’t think I need any more, uh, details—especially not after last night, and several uncomfortable times this morning.” Naruto paused awkwardly. “Like, really? There were at least two or three rounds this morning, is that really necessary on a mission?”
Minato stared at Naruto.
Then he burst out laughing.
“When you get to my age, Naruto,” chuckled Minato. “If you can go for more than one round a day, you’ll take it any time you can. When you have a loving relationship and a willing partner, it’s that much better.”
“Did not need to hear that from my father who just boned my best friend within earshot.”
Minato shook his head, patting beside him again.
“Naruto, you need to get used to seeing Sakura as someone who is a friend, not a sister or potential mate,” explained Minato.
“I don’t see her as—”
“Yes, you do,” said Minato gently. “And while I am sure she’s flattered, she isn’t interested, at least, not at the moment.”
“... we had a relationship before. It went well,” said Naruto, staring at the forest floor. Patches of snow had crept through the coniferous canopy.
“But it wasn’t a romantic relationship. It was more of a friends with benefits relationship,” said Minato knowingly.
“It was too, romantic,” argued Naruto.
“If so, the romantic love was one-sided,” said Minato compassionately. “She doesn’t see you that way, Naruto.”
“But she sees you that way?”
Inhaling deeply, Minato nodded. “It’s been ten months,” he said with a shrug. “We’ve been exclusive the entire time. Neither of us has talked about getting bored or wanting a break.”
“Ten. Months?” Naruto gaped at his father, who chuckled again and rubbed the back of his neck.
“Well, with our work schedules sometimes we go a few weeks without being able to see each other,” admitted Minato. “That part’s not so great.”
Naruto just stared at his father.
“You didn’t tell me you’ve been seeing someone for almost a year?” Naruto’s eyes were large and round, and his expression relayed how hurt he was.
“We didn’t want to make a big deal of it if it wasn’t going to work out. Then, we got so busy with work and life that the time flew by and…” Minato shrugged again. “Here we are.”
“And you thought that was the best way to share the news of your new relationship?” asked Naruto.
Minato smirked. “Would you have believed me otherwise?”
Naruto’s shoulders drooped.
“I walked out on her trying to talk to me at breakfast.”
“I’m sure she’ll accept your apology.”
Naruto nodded.
“The one you were mad at was me, not her,” said Minato calmly.
“Still am mad at,” said Naruto. “You’re taking advantage of her, and of your position as captain. Sakura can’t say ‘no’ to you without it potentially affecting her work. That’s wrong, Dad.”
“Sakura is the only person I’ve ever behaved this way with, Naruto,” promised Minato.
“This morning was not OK,” said Naruto stubbornly. “You’re affecting her reputation.”
“I needed one or two members of the team to get it through their heads to stop staring at Sakura’s backside when she runs. They’re going to be distracted on the mission and get themselves or her hurt,” said Minato.
“Don’t use Sakura as your lesson pony,” said Naruto to his father, holding his gaze. A hint of malevolent chakra flashed through him, reflecting in his foxy eyes. “Or Kurama and I will have something to say about it.”
